twentytwentyfour year in review

it feels like i’ve lived ten lifetimes this year. it’s been a difficult, beautiful, scary, fun, informative year and i’m feeling a big sigh of relief coming on now that the hustle and bustle of it all is easing up a bit.

this year’s end feels different than the last. i don’t have the urge to plan and prep and make lists of goals, but i guess spring cleaning has come early and i’m letting go of things i’ve been holding onto both physically and mentally. i feel like the desire to start the new year lighter is the only goal i have. so i’ve got items donate, things the toss, walks to take and time at home to enjoy.

small businesses had it hard this year and mine is no different. i have been struggling to find a way to make it work: making accessible functional art + making a good living with everything getting more expensive. i think part of me loves the challenge of working for myself and having to create my own path - i feel myself becoming a better person because of it. honestly, at this point, i can’t imagine doing anything else. i know that it’s wonky isn’t what i thought i’d be doing three+ years ago when i quit my job to pursue photography, but there’s a path behind me now that is wiggly and wavy and all mine. i’m nervous, excited and hopeful that what comes next will be exactly what i need to continue becoming a better artist, wife, daughter, aunt, friend, and human.

5 things i enjoyed in 2024

  1. getting a part-time job. i had two different part-time jobs this year, and the one i currently have has been just the social outlet and financial boost i needed to support my artist life.

  2. trying new things. i tried a few different forms and products this year ( mirrors, desk calendars, tea strainers, breakfast trays, etc) and it was nice to challenge myself with different techniques and hand building.

  3. getting a new camera. this was long overdue but truly changed the game for me in both photography and videography. i now bring my camera with me when i go out and have taken more pictures than i have in years. it feels good to stretch my photo muscles again ( and also have autofocus when i’m filming for youtube lol). team fujifilm!!

  4. upgrading my setup. at the start of the year, i did a big reset ot my lil’ workspace and it’s helped make things more ergonomic and efficient since i don’t have a lot of room to work.

  5. learning new editing software. i’ve been on youtube now for 3+ years and was just using adobe rush to make my videos. i was introduced to davinci resolve and will never look back again. it’s so easy, its free, and the color correction capabilities has made editing one of my favorite things to do!

2025 dreams right now are looking like - more selling online less in person, more collections of work less one offs, more creating less consuming, more getting out of my comfy zone less shying away from new aligned opportunities, more slow work less rushed work, more financial peace less financial stress, more of less and less of more. 😌
